Paul Howard Manship (after) (New York, 1885-1966) Susanna, originally modeled 1946-47 Bronze 5 5/8" height A portrayal of the Biblical story of Susanna and the elders. Green/dark brown patina, a posthumous casting believed by the Manship Artists Residence & Studio in Cape Ann to be authorized by Paul Manship's son John Manship. Marked "P. MANSHIP / ROMAN BRONZE WORKS NY" to the back base. Of the original commissioned Susanna marble sculpture, John Manship wrote the following: "Of all the commissions that crowded in on [Paul Manship] during these postwar years... the most successful was a nude figure for the garden of Houghton Metcalf in Middleburg, Virginia. Susanna, a kneeling girl rubbing herself with a cloth that is wrapped around one leg, shows Manship at his most classical and lyrical." (Manship, John.
