Jill Burkee (New York, b. 1953) Lady Justice, 1991 Bronze on granite base 35 1/2" height A large, finely cast depiction of the allegorical goddess Justitia, the personification of legal justice. Signed and dated by the artist, with a foundry mark present, the unique casting in a commissioned edition of one. The work was commissioned for $12,000 in 1990 by the exclusive society of lawyers The Inner Circle of Advocates, in celebration of a newly elected member. The Inner Circle's logo is present on a plaque affixed to the granite base. Jill Burkee is a renowned contemporary sculptor with works included in a variety of significant collections including the Smithsonian, British Museum, and Buccellati Foundation in Milan. Her public commissions can be found across the nation. Burkee maintains studios in New York and Italy, and works as an instructor at the Student Art League of New York. Provenance: a Kansas City collection, thence by descent from the aforementioned lawyer, thence from the artist.
