Dutch Ships Opposite Messina, circa 2nd half 18th c.
Oil on canvas
47" x 64"

A large European oil of ships in a port. A title plaque affixed to the frame reads "Dutch Ships Opposite Messina / Abraham Casembrot ca. 1660." Not signed. The gilt frame measures 56" x 73".

From the collection of a notable Kansas City doctor and benefactor. Said to be acquired from a dealer who acquired the painting in Europe.

Alternate spellings and related terms: Casembroodt, Dutch Golden Age

Condition

Mild overall craquelure. Grime across the surface. The canvas has not been relined. Fabric supports were added to two corners of the canvas to help secure the canvas to the stretcher. Completed restorations include a repaired 2" tear to the canvas at the rightmost tree with over-painting, a 2 1/4" scratch near the top right corner with in-painting, and two spot of over-painting in the bottom left quarter. There is a touch-up in the top left area of sky (1 3/4" round) that now appears slightly pale.
