An18th century oil portrait of a gentleman in silk finery. The work is signed to the right "J.S. Copley pinx. 1757," though the work is likely by someone in the circle of or inspired by John Singleton Copley. Measures 28" x 24", presented in a fine gilt frame that measures 36" x 32".
Written in oldhand to the reverse of the canvas, the portrait sitter is identified as "Count Pahlen, Military Governor of St. Petersburg," a reference to Peter Ludwig Graf van der Pahlen, best known for playing a role in the assassination of Emperor Paul of Russia in 1801. This identification is presumed spurious.
Provenance: Acquired from Bonhams London,British and Continental Oil Paintings, March 13, 1996.
Condition
There are areas of over-painting in the background and along the subject's right sleeve, but the countenance remains intact and original. There is a small area of flaking to the paint layer just left of the head, as well as a few instances of cracking paint.
