William Verplanck Birney (American, 1858-1909) Untitled (Gentleman Smoking a Pipe) Oil on canvas 16" x 12" A scene of a gentleman quietly reading and smoking a pipe in his study, dressed in a hunting costume typical of the 19th century. Signed "W. Verplanck Birney A.N.A." to the bottom left, indicative of Birney's membership in the American National Academy. In a gilt gesso frame that measures 24 1/4" x 20 1/2". Very good condition. A few very minor touch-ups are visible under blacklight. There is also mild cracking to a couple areas of the paint layer, but the paint layer is stable, without any losses. The frame has small losses and some cracking to the gesso.
