David Johnson (New York, 1827-1908) The Upper Wallkill, Orange County, NY Oil on canvas 13 1/8" x 16" A late 19th century view of the Wallkill River in southern New York state, with a maiden tending to cattle in the bucolic landscape. Signed with the artist's monogram to the bottom right, and titled on the stretcher to the reverse. In an extravagantly molded gold leaf frame of the period, measuring 23 1/2" x 27 1/2", with an attached nameplate. David Johnson was a landscape painter of the second-generation Hudson River School. Known for his landscapes of New York and the Northeast, Johnson was once proclaimed "the best painter of trees in America." His work may be found in numerous collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and many more.

Condition

Overall very good condition. Two tiny pinhole losses to the paint layer in the clouds area. No in-painting or other condition issues were observed under blacklight. The frame has cracking to the acanthus relief, and small losses to the gesso molding at the corners.
