Pencil-signed "Benton" in the lower right margin. The sheet measures 12" x 16". Hinged to a cardboard back mat and housed in protective foamboard, measuring 14" x 18". From an edition of 250, circulated by Associated American Artists, the lot complete with the original AAA cardboard shipping box.

 

Of White Calf, Benton commented: "Henry Look of Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard milking his cow. Henry had a good deal selling his milk until some prying summer persons found him straining it in his snot filled handkerchief. Trade with Henry dropped off after that."

Condition

Good condition. The sheet is not laid down, but hinged to a back mat at the top corners. Mat burn to the sheet from contact with the cardboard back mat, and negligible toning. One minor ink mark to the bottom right margin from the edge of the lithographic stone during the printing process. The sheet is beautifully flat and uncreased.
