(English, 1817-1897)
The Royal Messenger, 1865
Oil on canvas
42 1/4" x 30 1/4"

Artist's monogram and date to the bottom right. The reverse of the canvas is stamped "Prepared by Charles Roberson / 99 Long Acre, London." Presented in a frame that measures 49" x 37".

John Gilbert was an accomplished oil painter, watercolorist, and illustrator whose affinity for Romantic narrative scenes gained him the nickname "the Scott of painting" (a parallel to novelist Sir Walter Scott). Gilbert served as president of the Royal Watercolor Society in the 1870s, he was knighted in 1872, and he was inducted into the Royal Academy in 1876. Today, his paintings are held in numerous permanent museum collections across the UK and around the world.

Provenance: Acquired from Henry Ruth Fine Arts (Kansas City).

Condition

Fair and stable condition. A canvas tear to the bottom left background area was professionally patched and restored. Dry cracking and blistering to areas of the paint layer. Some grime and spatter, most evident in the sky areas.
