Marleen Stein Gold

(American, 1946-2020)

Francis at 46th, 1981

Oil on canvas

26 1/2" x 40"

Signed and dated to the bottom left corner, titled to the reverse. Housed in a slim mahogany frame.

Marleen Gold received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1979, influenced by her studies under Stanley Lewis, Wilbur Niewald, and Michael Walling. In 2022, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art celebrated her life and art with the retrospective "Deconstructing Marleen Gold," which related Gold's work to the likes of Lois Dodd, Wolf Kahn, and Fritz Scholder.

There is a vertical drip left of center which appears to have occurred during the painting process, as it slightly flattened the paint layer and faintly bled pigments. There is a horizontal row of staple holes along the bottom edge, the canvas apparently re-stretched at some point to a slightly larger size.
