Josef Kriehuber (Austrian, 1800-1876)
Karoline Pichler, circa 1830s
Oil on canvas
22" x 16 1/2"
A portrait of Karoline Pichler (Austrian, 1769-1843), a novelist and pupil of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who operated a literary salon attended by Beethoven, Schubert, and Schlegel. Josef Kriehuber was perhaps the most significant portrait artist of the Biedermeier period, painting an astounding number of noteworthy figures from the era including Francis I, Marie-Louise, Archdukes Johann, von Metternich, Liszt, Strauss, Pagganini, Schubert, Berlioz, Grillparzer, and many, many more.
Artist signature and sitter identification to the reverse of the original canvas (before it was lined with a Belgian linen in a vintage restoration), as pictured on a Polaroid included with the painting. Presented in a lighted gilt frame measuring 26" x 21".
Condition
The work underwent a 1983-84 restoration with detailed notes to the reverse: the canvas was relined and put on a gallery stretcher, the paint layer was cleaned and lightly retouched along the "stretcher bar edges only," and the frame was given a new gilt finish. One retouched area of the paint layer at the top center edge does extend down slightly into the lace bonnet.
