A 13" porcelain charger bearing a nicely hand-painted portrait of 16th c. Italian poet Torquato Tasso. He is portrayed wearing a laurel crown, indicative of his place in the lineage of the great poets; it is said that Pope Clement VIII intended to coronate Tasso with a laurel crown in the tradition of Petrarch, but Tasso tragically fell ill before the ceremony could be carried out. Circa 1900. To the underside is written "Torquato Tasso 1544-1595" beneath an unidentified painted mark.
