A flame-stitch wallet, circa late 18th to early 19th c., polychrome wool and green linen, with two interior compartments and a 19" strap. The wallet belonged to the Townsend family of western Massachusetts, as identified on a needlework name cartouche ("S. Townsend"), as well as in included ephemera. Measures 4 1/4" x 8" x 1 3/4".
Inside the wallet are two later financial log books / diaries belonging to Jonathan Townsend (1819-1892) of Tyringham, Massachusetts. These small leather booklets, with entries dating from 1845 to 1856, include notes on accepted jobs (at rates of $16 per month), inventories of bank notes, daily experiences and events, and details of court hearings as a juror in Lenox, MA, among other things.
Condition
Some grazing/loss to the wool, especially with the pink tones. Small tear to the liner in one of the compartments. The colors are good for the age.
