Birger Sandzen
(Kansas, 1871-1954)
Gray Day, Logan, Utah, 1930
Oil on board
14" x 12"
A landscape with poplars, executed in rich impasto with Sandzen's quintessential color palette. The bold brushstrokes of bright color typical of the artist's middle career make the paintings from this period the most coveted in Sandzen's oeuvre. Signed to the bottom right corner, and pencil-signed, titled, and dated to the reverse. The frame measures 21 1/2" x 19 1/2". Viewed and authenticated by the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas.
Very good condition, with no over-painting or touch-ups observed under blacklight inspection. The surface is bright and clean, and the board is perfectly flat and intact. A typical amount of minor cracking to the impasto, but there are no active concerns relating to cracking. There is a single small paint flake to the extreme top edge of the work, visible only when removed from the frame.
