School of Adolph Schreyer

(German, 1828-1899)

The Chase

Oil on canvas

20" x 28"

A dramatic scene of a Bedouin lancer chasing a white Arabian horse at full gallop, with another horseman in the middle ground and camel riders in the background. The composition echoes the narrative imagery of Adolph Schreyer's orientalist masterpiece "The Chase," and indeed the work was sold in 1985 to the present owner by W.H. Patterson Fine Arts Ltd. of London under the designation "school of Schreyer."

The back of the auxiliary canvas is not visible from the reverse, as it is loose-lined with a second modern medium brown polyester liner (the double canvas is a preventative measure in art conservation). The frame measures 24" x 32".

Condition

Good and stable condition. Blacklight inspection shows evidence of overpainting, primarily to the ground area in the right foreground.

In the case where the item is forfeited the winning bidder will not be compensated in any way. Lots left with Circle after the 16th day from the close of the auction are stored at the buyer’s risk.
