An Arithmometer with 8 sliding cursors and a 16-digit totalizer by Arthur Burkhardt, whose Erste Glashütter Rechenmaschinenfabrik was instrumental in the formation of the calculating machine industry in Germany in the late 19th century. First developed by Charles Xavier Thomas, Arithmometers were an important stepping stone between human computing and contemporary machine computing. Period dovetailed pine case, and small tin with screws and hardware.

The pine case measures 7" x 25" x 8".

Condition

The arithmometer needs work to function: though many knobs turn and slide, some seem to be jammed. There are areas of notable pitting at either end of the sliding carriage. Cracking to wooden knob elements. Scratches and mineral deposits on the front of the metal case.
