A 19th century gueridon or center table, inset with hand-painted Sevres-style porcelain portrait medallions. The central charger bears a full-length portrait of Henry IV of France, father of Louis XIII; surrounding plaques include a coat-of-arms of the king of France, Henry's wife Marie de' Medici, and various other French noblewomen from that period. Henry IV, called Henry the Good, is generally considered among France's finest monarchs. In spite of his outstanding reputation and historical import, Sevres portraits of Henry IV are rather rare in comparison to those of Louis XIV or Louis XVI.

The table bears the tag of Edwards & Roberts of Wardour Street, London, a firm active from 1845-1899. The base is ebonized wood with elaborate ormolu mounts. Fitted with a glass top. Measures 32" x 29".

Condition

There is some wear to the gilt borders around many of the miniature portraits. Some tarnish to the mounts.
