A large primitive carved burl bowl with a very old iron brace. American, 18th century.
Measures 6.5 x 15.75 x 11 inches.
The bowl shows its age with a beautiful patina, tool marks to the interior basin, and an overall very smooth hand. The iron brace holds together a very old wood split including a 5.5 inch loss to the rim, which has become intrinsic to the character of the piece. There is another hairline to the side opposite the brace, which has been neutralized with an adhesive.
