A single-owner collection of works by the Florida Highwaymen, a collective of 26 African American landscape painters formed in the 1950s. Denied the opportunity to show their work in the art galleries of the Jim Crow South, these artists, led by Harold Newton and Alfred Hair, drove up and down the roads of Southeast Florida selling their paintings out of the trunks of their cars. Their vibrant scenery and enterprising spirit stand as an inspiring example of Black art overcoming adverse circumstances, and today each member of the Highwaymen are inductees of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.

Oil on Upson board

24" x 30"

Sam Newton is one of the three Newton brothers among the Highwaymen, along with Harold and Lemuel. Sam began painting as a teenager, having followed his older brother Harold from Georgia to the Treasure Coast in Florida. Like his brothers, he worked carefully on his craft, rejecting the idea that some Highwaymen held that painting was a business first and foremost. His earlier works are on Upson board, the inexpensive material used by many Highwaymen, but as Sam developed he began painting on more traditional supports like canvas. His approach became increasingly distinct from other Highwaymen throughout his career, and he rejects the simple classification of "Highwaymen" used to lump his and his brothers' art together with so many others.

Condition

Very good condition. The painting is affixed to its original frame with nails directly through the edges of the board. No in-painting or over-painting noted upon blacklight inspection.
