Samuel Hammond started as a partner with Samuel Ward Benedict in 1841 and continued on his own after Benedict retired in 1860. The business was located in New York and focused on importing fine European watches created by the top watchmakers of the time. Hammond negotiated an additional fee to have the European watchmakers put his name on the watches he imported. Hammond's watches were especially sought after by the captains of naval vessels who needed reliable and accurate time pieces.
