A half-length portrait of a gentleman named Fleming, in fine dress and standing next to his writing desk, late 18th/early 19th century, English school. To the top left is the Fleming family crest. The sheet in the subject's hand reads "to Rich.d Peter Fleming / Esq.r / Cadiz." A later nameplate affixed to the frame reads "Gen. Fleming -- 1742-1801 / Fouche".
The canvas measures 41" x 33", and the frame measures 44 1/2" x 36 1/2".
Provenance: The Shirley Bush Helzberg and Webster House collections.
Condition
There is a horizontal scrape to the paint layer across the gentleman's stomach and right arm. The canvas has been re-stretched on a larger stretcher to include more of the canvas on the front view, which has left a crease/rough area that appears as a border around the canvas an inch inside the frame's sight edge. On inspection under blacklight, the only in-painting or over-painting is to that border, the issue of which could be resolved by re-stretching the canvas to the original stretcher size.
