Moses Soyer
(New York, 1899-1974)
The Actress, 1959
Oil on canvas
19" x 13"
Signed to the top left corner, titled and dated on a Rabin & Krueger Gallery (Newark) label to the reverse. Housed in a frame measuring 24 1/2" x 18 1/2".
The sitter for this painting was likely Cynthia Brown, who modeled for Moses Soyer and his brother Raphael over the course of 20 years. Cynthia's angular features fit what art critic Charlotte Willard described as "[Soyer's] skinny American girl, driven by her dreams, Gothic in her sparseness, vulnerable but strong... the Venus of our time. She is the prototype of thousands of American girls who come to the cities to make their way... He paints his Venus first as a worker, then as a dancer, as partner, as lover, as mother."
Very good condition, with no in-painting or touch-ups noted under blacklight inspection.
