A single-owner collection of works by the Florida Highwaymen, a collective of 26 African American landscape painters formed in the 1950s. Denied the opportunity to show their work in the art galleries of the Jim Crow South, these artists, led by Harold Newton and Alfred Hair, drove up and down the roads of Southeast Florida selling their paintings out of the trunks of their cars. Their vibrant scenery and enterprising spirit stand as an inspiring example of Black art overcoming adverse circumstances, and today each member of the Highwaymen are inductees of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.

Mary Ann Carroll

(Florida, 1940-2019)

Royal Poinciana

Oil on Upson board

24" x 36"

Signed to the lower right. The frame measures 28" x 40".

Mary Ann Carroll was the only woman among the Highwaymen. At just 16 years old, Carroll observed Harold Newton painting a royal poinciana in Fort Pierce, and by 18 she had joined the group and begun selling her own paintings. Gary Monroe, author of several books on the Highwaymen, noted Carroll as someone whose bold color sensibilities had a strong influence on the collective. Born the daughter of sharecroppers in rural Georgia and working for many years in relative obscurity, Mary Ann Carroll was honored with a 2011 invitation by Michelle Obama to the First Lady’s Luncheon, where she presented the First Lady with a painting of a poinciana.

This single-owner Florida Highwaymen collection was thoughtfully assembled between 1998 and 2004, with works acquired from respected sources such as the A. E. Backus Gallery and Museum, Florida art dealers John Phillips and Bob Lablanc, and noted collectors Ty and Jean Tyson.

Condition

Fair condition. There are two lines of shallow stippled indentions, as if the board was lightly run across with a roulette tool: one in the central clouds area and the other across the trees to the right. Several cracks and small losses to the impasto on the poinciana flowers, as shown in the photos. Mild spatter to the right of the painting.
