Kris Kuksi

(Kansas, b. 1973)

Churchtank [Type 4], 2007

Mixed media assemblage

9" x 11 1/2" x 4 1/2"

Artist Kris Kuksi filters the macabre symbolism of Hieronymus Bosch through the lens of pop culture collectibles, resulting in an oeuvre of engaging, ornate, and wholly unique assemblages. His award-winning sculptures have been shown in galleries and museums worldwide, garnering notable patrons along the way, including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Robin Williams, Usher, and Guillermo del Toro. Kuksi was described by Del Toro: "A postindustrial Rococo master, Kris Kuksi obsessively arranges characters and architecture with an exquisite sense of drama. Kuksi uses screaming plastic soldiers, miniature engine blocks, towering spires and assorted debris to form his land scapes. The political, spiritual, and material conflict within these shrines is enacted under the calm gaze of remote deities and august statuary. Kuksi manages to evoke, at once, a sanctum and a mausoleum for our suffocated spirit."

This early example from Kuksi's ongoing Churchtank series represents a pivotal and personal theme to Kuksi: the menace of weaponizing organized religion. Kuksi explained his iconoclastic use of religious symbols: “I enjoy the idea of distorting classical and religious sculpture because it is what mankind has always done. Humans have borrowed gods from other gods. The Romans replaced Greek gods, the Christians replaced Pagan gods, and so on. I just like to create the next step, another parallel reality where I have stolen from classical and religious imagery and created new symbols and idols."
