John Falter

(American, 1910-1982)

Winter Evening, Lancaster County

Oil on canvas

11 1/4" x 14 1/4"

A painting of Amish horse-drawn buggies driving through a covered bridge on a snowy evening. Signed to the bottom left corner, framed to 16" x 19".

In 1976, John Falter became the 24th member of the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame, best known for his 129 covers for the Saturday Evening Post. Among the myriad facets of American life covered by Falter, depictions of covered bridges and Pennsylvania Dutch Amish and Mennonite communities were recurring subjects of the artist's work.

The commissioned oil is accompanied by a study executed in graphite and gouache on brown paper. The study, framed to 12" x 14", sketches the same view of the covered bridge, but as a daytime scene with skaters on the frozen creek. Falter opted for the more atmospheric evening scene for the final oil, the buggies lit with carriage lamps.

Provenance: A private Leawood, KS estate, commissioned and acquired directly from the artist.

Condition

The oil is in good condition, with no retouching apparent under blacklight inspection. There is some subtle scuffing to the paint surface only visible under raking light.
