Joe Evans
(New York, 1857-1898)
The Shed, 1894
Oil on canvas
22" x 16"

Signed and dated to the bottom right corner. Presented in a frame that measures 28" x 22".

19th century landscape painter Joe Evans studied at the National Academy of Design (New York) and L'Ecole des Beaux Arts (Paris) with Jean Leon Gerome. He was a close friend of painter Dennis Bunker (Massachusetts, 1861-1890), with whom he would frequently paint. Evans served as president of the Art Students League and secretary of the Society of American Artists. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 40 due to ongoing health complications.

Gallerist Henry Tully Moss observed that this particular oil painting possesses "a silver quietness... which requires a superb technique to accomplish. The refinement in color harmonies and fineness of execution reflect his training under [Jean-Leon] Gerome."

Provenance: From a private collection, acquired from Henry Ruth Fine Arts (Kansas City).

Condition

Very good condition, with no in-painting or over-painting observed under blacklight inspection. Very fine spatter to the bottom right quadrant. Some cracking to the frame's gesso decoration.
