An elaborately decorated French
prie-dieu kneeling bench, having a central crucifix with a spear and scepter in a network of scrolling acanthus leaves. Circa 19th century. Gilt gesso over carved wood, with silk upholstery. Turned columns and drop finials, paw feet, and a single drawer below the elbow rest.
Measures 34 1/2" x 28" x 16".
Condition
The piece is fragile, with breakage and losses to the gilt gesso. The drawer will open and close, but with some difficulty. The fill to the kneeling surface and elbow rest has become embrittled.
