A leather folio containing collected sketches of Frederic James (Missouri, 1915-1985), including many from early in the artist's life. The folio amounts to a fascinating lifetime-spanning document of an artist's journey, including a developing style and various interests and travels. Measures 15 1/4" x 12 1/2". The contents of the folio include:

-A pencil sketch of pioneer settlement, covered wagon, and street car, and a pencil sketch of a circus with lion cage, the reverse with pencil sketches of WWI era guns and helmets, all from the artist's childhood. Each signed later by the artist, the latter is dated to the early 1920s.

-Two Christmas themed linoleum block prints, 1935, each with artist inscription.

-"Debutante of the Public Service Co." pencil sketch, signed by the artist, dated to the 1930s.

-10 pages of figural sketches (some of the subjects identified by name), each dating from the artist's college days, 1934-1936.

-Pencil drawing of an interior, inscribed "For Alan, with fond recollections of Ann Arbor 1936 / Fred. 1945."

-Ink and watercolor of a Tennessee landscape, signed and dated 1945.

-Inkwash inscribed "Tarpaulin Cove, Naushon Island, August 22, '53."

-Inkwash of Luxor Temple ruins, Egypt. Signed and dated 1955.

-Pen and inkwash inscribed "La Playa, Mazatlan, Mexico, Feb '61."

-Seven pages of sketches of Kansas City Royals and spectators, circa 1970s. One appears to be Dennis Leonard. Another seems to have likenesses including George Brett and Cookie Rojas.

-Sketch of Ethel Merman on a 1978 playbill, which was subsequently signed and inscribed "To Fred, Ethel Merman."

-Ink sketches from a circus, dated 1983.

-Inkwash portrait of a woman named Bambi.

-Ink pen studies of a puppy named Papageno.

-Marker sketch of the University Club, Kansas City, MO.

-Two sheets with sketches and notes of architecture, including Chilmark Church on Martha's Vineyard.

-Charcoal interior study

-4 sheets with pen and pencil sketches of boats and ships-Sepia wash still life, inscribed and signed "For Diana / F. James."
