A fine half-length oil portrait of an unidentified woman of the Victorian period, wearing a black dress with a lace collar, pictured with jewelry including a brooch and a cross-adorned pocket watch and chain. The portrait is nicely completed with a landscape background and red drapery. Not signed. The sight measures 27 1/2" x 21 1/2". Presented in a period gilt frame with oval spandrel, the frame measuring 40" x 35".
Condition
A very small tear in the right side sky area has been patched and in-painted. There is in-painting or over-painting evident under blacklight inspection in the background and on the suit, but the face has not been touched up. Despite the spandrel frame, the portrait was painted to the edges of a rectangular canvas; the paint layer behind the spandrel does show some flaking from abrasion, so if the piece were to be displayed in full rectangular format, it would require some restoration. Minor losses to the frame's gilt gesso molding.
