A fine half-length oil portrait of an unidentified bearded gentleman of the Victorian period, pictured with a gold watch chain. Not signed. The sight measures 27 1/2" x 21 1/2". Presented in a period gilt frame with oval spandrel, the frame measuring 40" x 35".
There is over-painting evident under blacklight inspection in the background and on the suit, but the portrait likeness remains original. Despite the spandrel frame, the portrait was painted to the edges of a rectangular canvas; the paint layer behind the spandrel does show some flaking from abrasion, so if the piece were to be displayed in full rectangular format, it would require some restoration. A piece of the frame's bottom gesso molding is nearly loose.
