Ernst Barlach was an early and influential German expressionist sculptor and printmaker whose harrowing experience in the first World War led him to staunchly anti-war themes throughout his artistic career. As with many of his contemporaries, Barlach was condemned by the Nazi Party as a "degenerate artist," and much of his art was consequently confiscated and destroyed.
