A good Davenport-type walnut desk informed by the Aesthetic movement and Gothic revival. The slant top is inset with finely tooled leather. The writing surface lifts to reveal a storage compartment, hinged with decorative period straps. The top deck centers on a glazed cabinet with drop-front door, flanked by shelves. Pierced trefoil designs are outlined in incised string gilding. Raised burl panels on each side, and two oxbow shelves underneath the desk surface. American or English, circa 1875-1885.
Measures 50" x 25 1/2" x 21".
Good to very good condition. The interior of the lift-top cabinet has some ink staining. The small glazed cabinet door is missing its escutcheon.
