Christian August Gunther (Dresden, 1759-1824) Watercolor on laid paper 12 1/2" x 19" An original watercolor painting on watermarked Van der Ley laid paper, depicting a family walking through an idyllic rural homestead. Signed "Gunther" to the bottom edge (outside of the mat sight), with an antique attribution in pencil to the reverse. Matted but not framed (the mat measures 18 5/8" x 25 1/8"). Christian August Gunther received his training from Romantic landscape painter Adrian Zingg (Swiss, 1734-1816) at the Dresden Art Academy, and himself would go on to be a faculty member at that historic academy in his late career. In addition to painting, Gunther was known for his output of engravings and etchings after 17th century Dutch masters.

Condition

The sheet is not laid down, but affixed to the mat with old tape. Good condition, or very good considering the age. There is a very slight puncture with no loss located in the clouds, and a little bit of subtle creasing more visible on the reverse of the sheet.
