A late 19th century French bishop's
cathedra, extravagantly decorated with heavily carved lions
passant to each side. The arms are carved "SALVE" in low relief. The crest rail is finely inlaid with Nouveau-inspired religious marquetry: on the front, the outline of a saint (likely the Madonna) flanked by angels, and on the back, a central
fleur-de-lis with scrolling foliage. Golden yellow velvet seat with nailhead trim.
Measures 28" x 27" x 26".
Condition
The veneer on the back of the crest rail at each end is splintered, though the rail remains firmly intact. Typical wear to the top of the arms. The velvet seat is a little rough in texture.
