A Curta Type I pocket calculator with its original metal case, serial number 10364 (August 1951). The Curta was designed by Austrian engineer Curt Herzstark(1902-1988) in the late 1930s, thoughHerzstark'sinternment in the Buchenwald concentration camp during WWII prevented the first prototypes from being created until 1945(production didn't begin until 1948). According to an article in
Scientific American, the Curta was considered the best portable calculator until the invention of electronic calculators in the 1970s.
