Circle Auction is pleased to present our Fall 2024 Art & Antiques auction, a curated mix of fine art and objects from various distinguished collections. Highlights of the auction include various lithographs by Thomas Hart Benton, Birger Sandzen, and John Steuart Curry; oil paintings by Robert Sudlow, Janna Thomas de Valarde sterling dresser box, Doug Osa watercolor, Staffordshire figurines, art glass studio vases, sterling, a large collection of english 18th and 19th century furniture, antique oil paintings, and a significant Allan Houser bronze sculpture.

A hand-written $500 money order written and signed by Joel Barlow (American, 1754-1812) in 1811, during his tenure as U.S. Minister to France. Framed with a ribbon and engraved portrait of Barlow clipped from the deluxe first edition of The Columbiad (1807). The frame measures 7 1/2" x 12 1/2". The note reads:

 

"$500 -- Bank of Columbia -- 1st-- On the 16th day of January next pay to the order of Sam.l Eliot Jr. five hundred dollars for account of Joel Barlow / Paris 21 Nov. 1811"

 

Joel Barlow was an American revolutionary patriot, diplomat, poet, and philosopher. His involvement and support for the French Revolution led to his election to the French Assembly, and he was granted French citizenship in 1792. As a diplomat, he authored the Treaty of Tripoli in 1796. As a poet, he is best known for The Hasty-Pudding (1793) and The Columbiad (1807). He was named the 8th U.S. ambassador to France in 1811, a post previously held by Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe.

 

Samuel Eliot Jr. (1739-1820) was a prominent Boston banker, a notable benefactor whose considerable wealth helped establish Massachusetts General Hospital.

Condition

Tape stain to the top left corner, typical browning and folding to the paper. Some wear to the frame.

Pick Up, Packing, & Shipping: Winning bidders may pick up their lots, once paid in full, at Circle’s auction office Monday through Friday from 10am-4pm, beginning the first business day following the date of the auction. Lots are not available for pick-up on Saturdays, Sundays, or national holidays. If packing and shipping is required, we can provide you with a list of recommended shippers by request. You will be responsible to contact, arrange shipment, and pay 3rd party shippers. Circle will not be responsible for loss or damage of purchased lots handled or shipped, nor for acts and omissions, by 3rd party shippers, whether recommended by us or not. Circle will not release the lot for shipment until payment has been made in full and a buyer’s written shipping authorization form has been received. Winning bids may not be retracted, canceled or rescinded due to issues with shipping including, but not limited to, costs or prohibitions. It is the responsibility of the bidder to account for shipping prior to bidding. Failure to Pick Up & Storage: Winning bidders must pick up or have lots shipped within 15 calendar days of the close of the auction. On lots requiring a blanket shipper, shipping must be scheduled with the blanket shipper and confirmed with the auction house within 15 calendar days of the close of the auction,with lot pick-up scheduled no later than 30 calendar days from the close of the auction. On the 16th day from the close of the auction Circle has the right to charge the winning bidder a storage fee of $5 per lot per day. Lots that have been paid for, but remain on our premises sixty (60) days from the close of the auction may be sold by Circle, with no notice to the buyer. Any funds in excess of the purchase price, commissions, applicable costs, and storage fees will be remitted to the original winning bidder. At the point where storage fees associated with an unshipped item exceed the hammer price of the item the winning bidder will be considered in default of our terms and conditions and forfeits ownership to Circle Auction or its affiliated companies. In the case where the item is forfeited the winning bidder will not be compensated in any way. Lots left with Circle after the 16th day from the close of the auction are stored at the buyer’s risk.
